#7” (hash seven inch) is an edition of 200 second-hand records chosen randomly from a bargain bin in Steel Wheels, Newcastle upon Tyne and physically remixed by Christopher Rollen.

Each is scored on both sides with the same mark – a radial groove across the playing surface every 45 degrees, creating an eight-pointed star shape. When the records are played this generates a heavy, regular beat that speeds up as the stylus progresses towards the centre, underneath which can be heard the original recording.

As Rollen explains: “The resulting ‘recorded message’ uses the host recording as background surface, as the space between. It’s re-cycled, re-hashed and united into something new.”

The record labels are overprinted with black heat-sensitive ink, obscuring the original details, which can be revealed when held in warm hands. The original packaging has been discarded and replaced with a specially printed PVC sleeve.
